Make an image lighter without it becoming visible. On this page the quality slider is on from the start; move it down and you see, right beside the original, what it costs and what it saves — including how many percent smaller the file has become. If you need to go further than quality alone allows, reduce the dimensions too: in percentages, in pixels, or in centimetres with a dpi value for print. You choose the output format yourself. This tool used to force WebP on everything, even a PNG with transparency; that is no longer the case. WebP usually produces the smallest file, but "same as original" simply keeps what you put in. The same tool also crops, rotates and converts — anything you don’t switch on is left alone. Everything happens locally in your browser: nothing is uploaded, logged or kept. What does DPI mean in this tool?

DPI determines how many pixels per inch are used when you enter a physical size in centimeters. The tool converts cm to pixels; for print, the downloaded file may still need separate DPI metadata.

Can I preview the result?

Yes. After each change the preview shows the new dimensions, the estimated file size and the difference from the original, so you can judge the trade-off before downloading. Compare at the size the image will actually be displayed at — artefacts that are obvious at 400 percent zoom are usually invisible in the page itself.

Which format is downloaded?

Whichever you choose. The default is "same as original": a JPEG stays a JPEG, a PNG stays a PNG. Beyond that you can pick WebP, AVIF, JPEG or PNG. For photos WebP usually gives the smallest file at equal quality and is supported by every current browser; AVIF goes one step further but cannot be written by every browser — if yours cannot, the option is disabled rather than handing you a file that is called .avif without being one. Until August 2026 this tool always forced WebP, which meant a PNG you supplied silently changed format and lost its transparency to a white backing. Both are fixed.

Is the original changed?

No. The tool reads your file, produces a new version and offers it as a download; the original on your disk is untouched and never overwritten. Keep that original, because compression is not reversible: the detail that was discarded does not return by compressing less heavily later. Always work from the original for any further edit.

Why does my transparent PNG no longer turn white?

Because a white backing is now only placed under your image when the output format is JPEG, and JPEG is the only one of the four that has no notion of transparency. WebP, AVIF and PNG handle transparency fine, so there it stays. The old compressor always filled white, even for WebP output, so every logo with a see-through background came out on a white slab.
